What is the Best Vacuum Cleaner for Pet Hair?

Having a pet in your home means an almost constant battle with your biggest nemesis – pet hair. No matter how cute and cuddly your pet may be, you don’t want to be living with carpet and couches covered in his shed hair. A good vacuum is your solution to unwanted pet hair, but with so many vacuums on the market, how can you know which one is best for your particular need? While any vacuum is better than not having one at all, certain ones seem to have a better effect on pet hair. Here’s what you need to know about choosing a vacuum to help you deal with the unwanted hair in your home.

What Makes a Vacuum Good for Pet Hair?

When shopping for a vacuum, should you simply look for one with the word “pet” in its name, and move on? If you want the best possible option, the answer is no. Any manufacturer can add “pet” to the name of its machine without actually having features that make it good for pets.

Before looking at specific vacuums, it’s helpful to know what features make a vacuum particularly good for pet hair. Specifically, you’ll want to look for a vacuum that won’t cause the hair to get stirred up and blown around when you vacuum because of poor suction and sealing. You’ll also want a vacuum that doesn’t leave behind visible patches of fur. A brush that won’t get tangled with pet hair is also great. Finally, vacuums with bags instead of canisters can be better, because the pet hair can escape back into your home when you empty the canister. In a bag, it stays contained until it’s safely in the garbage bin. If you choose a canister model, and some have excellent pet hair ratings, just be sure to empty the bin into your outdoor garbage can so no stray hairs go flying.

Three Vacuums Ideal for Pet Hair

So here’s the practical side of the discussion. Which vacuums are going to give you the best possible cleaning for home with pet hair. Here are three to consider:

Miele Complete C3 Marin Vacuum Cleaner

The Miele Complete C3 Marin vacuum is bag-equipped. If has a brush on/off switch, manual carpet pile-height adjustment, suction control and telescopic wand. The vacuum has a high suction power of 1,200 W and is useable on hardwood and carpet. Foot controls mean you don’t have to bend over to turn it on or off or make other adjustments.

What makes this particular vacuum great for pet hair is its high suction power and its HEPA AirClean filtration. This filtration system uses multiple stages to prevent allergens from circulating while vacuuming. This starts with the Mile AirClean 3D Efficiency dust bag, which traps most allergens, as well as a pre-motor filter and another exhaust filter. Miele claims this will trap over 99.9% of dust and other allergens, so your allergies won’t be stirred up when you vacuum.

The Miele vacuum also has a tight seal. This helps improve suction while reducing the amount of hair that escapes during vacuuming. It’s also designed with the company’s Silence System, which adds noise insulation to make the vacuum quieter than most, without sacrificing cleaning abilities.

So what’s the downside of the Miele Complete C3? That would be its price. This vacuum runs around $1,100, but provides excellent cleaning capabilities and a long expected lifespan. If you like a canister vacuum, want the best possible cleaning, and don’t care about price, this may be a good fit.

Miele Dynamic U1 Cat & Dog Vacuum Cleaner

Here’s one that actually puts “cat” and “dog” into the title. The Miele Dynamic U1 Cat & Dog vacuum was specifically designed by Miele for pet hair. This is an upright vacuum that weighs 22 pounds and uses a bag to successfully trap pet hair. It comes with a power brush, upholstery tool, crevice tool and dusting brush.

Like the pervious vacuum, this one has a high suction power of 1,200 W. Even though it’s a canister vacuum, it’s highly maneuverable, so you can vacuum around furniture with ease. It also has a 4-foot flexible hose extension for hard-to-reach places.

The Miele Dynamic U1 Cat & Dog vacuum is equipped with the Miele Active AirClean filter. This particular filter is ideal for pets, because it neutralizes pet odors specifically. It comes with a time strip visual indicator that tells when you need to change the filter to keep the system running as it should. It’s also equipped with the same multi-level filter system as other Miele vacuums, including the AirClean 3D Efficiency dust bag, pre-motor filter and exhaust filter. This traps more dust and pet hair than other models.

This vacuum has an integrated roller brush which doesn’t get filled up with pet hair easily. The brush cleans the carpet fibers while also restoring the plush of the pile. The brush and beater bar rotate steadily and apply uniform pressure to the carpeting. This gets deep into the carpet fibers and thoroughly cleans even heavily used areas and thick carpeting.

This particular vacuum provides similar cleaning abilities as the Miele Complete C3, but with a price tag that’s about half of the other model. You can find a Miele Dynamic U1 Cat & Dog vacuum for between $500 and $600.

Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Upright Vacuum Cleaner

If you really don’t want to mess with the hassle and expense of bags, then you may want to consider the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball upright vacuum cleaner. What makes this particular vacuum so good for pet hair is the fact that it has some of the best suction technology on the market. This excellent suction has replaced the need for a filter. Filters can make suction decrease over time, so a vacuum without a filter will have better suction for longer. In fact, Dyson’s tested the Cinetic Big Ball and rates it for a minimum of 10 years of excellent suction.

The Dyson Cinetic scents puts oscillating tips at the end of the suction system. This movement is continuous, and that prevents dust from building up and blocking airflow. The tips also limit the need for a pre-motor filter, without sacrificing the cleaning capabilities.

Dyson’s Big Ball vacuum cleaners are known for their impressive maneuverability. The vacuum steers easily at the turn of your wrist and has a self-adjusting cleaner head to automatically adjust for hard and carpeted floors. It also has a detachable wand with a long hose, so you can run up the stairs to vacuum them while leaving the vacuum on the main floor.

The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball was tested through an independent testing panel and received certification as asthma and allergy friendly from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. This means that it will effectively remove and trap hair and dust from the home and help your family breathe freely.

Of course, this is not a bagged vacuum, so you will need to empty the canister outside your home to prevent debris from entering the home again. But, with the other benefits, and the reality that you won’t have to keep buying vacuum bags, that may be a hassle that you are willing to deal with.

Now, you may be wondering why this is the recommended cleaner and not the Dyson Ball Animal? The answer is that this is the same vacuum as the one with the word “animal” in the name, except in a different color and without the pet hair brush. You can save a little bit by buying the Cinetic Big Ball and adding a pet hair brush as an accessory, if you feel you could benefit from one.

Of the three vacuums, this one is the most affordable, with a price tag of just under $400. This, combined with the ability to forgo the purchase of bags, makes it a great choice.

No matter which of these vacuums you choose, you will see a significant reduction in the amount of pet hair you have to deal with after upgrading to a better vacuum. This will make your enjoyment of your pets in your home much more pleasant. If you love your pets but hate the hair, then it’s time to upgrade to a new vacuum cleaner.
